September 9, 1944 Mission Against Troop Concentrations at L-823017 (Santa Lucia)

Squadron	War Diary
Group HQ	Yesterday's and today's [September 9th] targets were both close support of the 5th Army's offensive against the Gothic Line driving from Florence to Bologna. Troop concentrations just north of Florence were bombed yesterday with the areas indicated as targets completely covered.
486th	Not assigned to this mission
487th	At 17:00 hours twelve planes and crews of the Squadron took off to bomb enemy defenses at l-823017 north of Florence. Cloud shadows and a large hill partially obscured the target and the first box returned with their bombs although the second box dropped with good results. Anti-aircraft fire was accurate, although moderate and only one ship was holed......T/Sgt. McClernon went down into the bomb-bay and kicked out a frag which was tangled in the wires. This act of heroism will get for him a Soldiers Medal and another point towards demobilization.
