April 6, 1945 Mission to La Spezia Gun Positions & Ship

Squadron War Diary
340th HQ In Corsica today our planes took off to attack Poggio Rusco rail bridge and a ship in La Spezia, both of which were missed. 340th also attacked a coastal gun near La Spezia, with believed good results. This was a close support target, the gun having held up the advance of the 92nd American division on the nearby town of Massa.

488th [Attack on Guns]
Results: Burst started at shoreline and walked through target area about 600 ft.
[Attack on Cruiser]
Results: Pattern fell 30 feet short of ships.
489th The establishment of the squadron at this new area [Rimini, Italy] is progressing rapidly and satisfactorily. No missions are being run from here, but we are hitting at the ememy from Alesan, Corsica, where a skelton ground force is "keeping 'em flying." Very shortly, perhaps in the next day or so, all personnel and all our airplanes will be located here. Being considerably closer to the extreme northern part of Italy, Austria, and Southern Germany, we should be able to run more missions than we're running from Corsica.
